The Evolution of Fashion
One of the best aspects of fashion is what I like to call, “the recycled style method”. Fashion is constantly revolving and emerging into this poignant task of developing fresh new looks but whenever a designer gives us a history lesson from the past, it’s bound to make new waves. Transforming old school looks into modern styles is eclectic and genius. I’ve always appreciated designers who pay tribute to the originals style-makers by glamorizing various looks from previous generations.
Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2017 Campaign: Soul Scene is an collaborative effort to pay tribute to the trendy styles of the late 60’s early 70’s in black culture. With emphasis on the carefree attitudes from the youth, creative director Christopher Simmonds features solely black models in urban England dance hall Mildmay Club prancing around freely in vibrant mixed print clothing. Simmonds reeled us back to the era where sophistication, eccentricity and edgy-glam were the main components to completing an outfit. Photographer Glen Luchford captures the essence of freedom and a lively spirit through smooth dance moves showing the kaleidoscopic-dreamy threads, giving us a thrilling high-fashion fall collection.
With inspiration from Malian artist Malick Sidibe, the campaign depicts a modern version of Sidibe’s work. Sidibe’s historic photography was acknowledgement of a vintage African style with the accumulation of pop culture in Mali by capturing their lifestyle through shapes and movements. Gucci’s dance hall theme pronounces the element of youth at it’s best, free from critical perception and dancing without fear or restraint.
Designer Alessandro Michele uses boldness to create a spontaneous street-style look pulled together with conscious use of platforms, mixed prints and various textures; thus, giving us an update on my favorite style, sophisticated-edgy glam. Gucci sets you up to get fashionably gritty with dynamic pieces of fanny packs, sequins, electric floral, rainbow, tie dye blends and leather booties.
My interpretation of this campaign is an inspirational carefree movement teaching us to rebel against social guidelines and focus on defining identity on our own terms. Blurring the lines between fashion, reality and freedom is so liberating and spiritually appealing for the industry.
How do you plan to rock this new look for Fall 2017?
